Quinn Named to 2014 Johnny Bench Award Watch List

Rhode Island senior Pat Quinn has been named to the 2014 Johnny Bench Award watch list, announced Thursday evening by the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission. Each year, prestigious award is given to the nation's top Division I collegiate catcher.

A team captain for the Rams, Quinn has appeared in 143 games over the course of his career, splitting time between catcher, first base and DH. With Quinn as URI's starter behind the dish, the Rams have posted a 29-17 (.630) record dating back to the 2011 season. He also boasts a .988 fielding percentage with just six errors on 529 career chances.

Offensively, nearly thirty percent of Quinn's 115 career hits have been for extra bases as he has collected 24 doubles, four triples and three home runs.

Because the award is given annually to the top Division I collegiate catcher, this initial list will be updated to include other candidates until May 5, 2014. The watch list will then be narrowed down to a groups semifinalists, which will be announced on May 15. From there, ballots will be sent to a national voting panel to determine the three finalists (announced June 3). A final vote among the national committee will occur during the College World Series. All finalists will be brought to Wichita and the winner will be announced at the 17th Annual Greater Wichita Sports Banquet on June 26.

A note about the award:
The annual award is to honor those athletes that serve as a team's starting catcher in at least 75% of the games. Nominees that end up playing primarily another position, such as designated hitter, or those that split their time with another catcher in a 50/50 situation will be disqualified from semifinalist selection. Although the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission acknowledges the talent of those athletes, it does not fall in line with the awards' guidelines and therefore, such individuals will not proceed in the voting process.
