How It Happened
Rhode Island's veterans led the team back from a second-half double-digit deficit as the Rams won at La Salle, 78-67, Saturday afternoon.

Rhody (10-7, 3-2 Atlantic 10) found itself down 42-32 after the Explorers (3-14, 1-4 A-10) opened the second half with a 9-1 run. Junior Jeff Dowtin scored five straight points to cut the lead in half. The Rams continued to heat up, eventually taking the lead after a Jermaine Harris basket followed by a free throw from Dowtin made the score 44-43 URI.

Dowtin, Fatts Russell and Cyril Langevine control the game down the stretch. The trio combined for 39 of Rhody's 47 second half points. Dowtin scored 18 points while Russell – playing in front of his hometown Philadelphia crowd – had 15 points on 4-of-6 shooting in the second half. Langevine added six points and six rebounds as the Rams managed to pull away late.

  • Junior Cyril Langevine had his 10th double-double of the season, finishing with 19 points, 14 rebounds and two blocked shots. He had 13 points and eight boards while keeping the Rams close in the first half.
  • Langevine's fifth rebound was the 500th of his career.
  • Sophomore Fatts Russell had 20 points, six rebounds and four assists. He also was 9-of-12 at the free throw line.
  • The Rams improved to 9-0 when Russell makes at least four free throws in a game.
  • Junior Jeff Dowtin had a team-high 22 points, four rebounds and three steals.
  • Senior Ryan Preston gave a boost, scoring four points in six minutes. His emphatic dunk late helped ice the victory.
  • Freshman Tyrese Martin was limited to three points, but he also had nine rebounds, two steals and two assists.
  • As a team, the Rams shot .571 from the floor (28-of-49). It is the third time in four games Rhody has shot .540 or better as a team.
  • The Rams had nine turnovers in the first half, which led to a 14-0 advantage in points off turnovers for La Salle. In the second half, the Rams had an 8-7 edge in points off turnovers.
  • This was Rhode Island's first win in a game it trailed at halftime. The Rams were 0-5 in such games entering Saturday.
