KINGSTON, R.I. - Rhode Island men's soccer standout Stavros Zarokostas has joined the Charleston Battery of the USL Championship. The Coventry, R.I. native was originally selected by the New York Red Bulls in the 2020 MLS SuperDraft, but was picked up by Charleston after being released by New York.
"I'm excited to be here and I can't wait to get back on the field and score some goals for the Battery," Zarokostas said in a video interview with Charleston's Poppy Miller.
Zarokostas officially signed with with the Battery on March 6, but - until recently - had spent limited time on the field with his team due to social distancing and the COVID-19 pandemic. The team has just recently resumed training activities in small groups.
"It was very refreshing actually doing stuff outside, actual soccer stuff, not just Zoom sesssions," Zarokostas said Miller, joking that he much prefers being on the field and "doing real soccer stuff" to jumping jacks and pushups.
As of now, Charleston is scheduled to kick off its 2020 schedule at Loudoun United on June 6.
