By the time the quarter ended, Nichols had 17 points and Samford led by 18, 37-19.

The Bulldogs extended the lead to 24 points early in the third quarter. After Rhode Island scored the first five points of the period to cut the lead to 37-24, Samford scored 19 unanswered points to pull ahead, 56-24. A pair of Jalissa Ross free throws finally ended the run, but the Rams entered the final quarter trailing by 30 points, 58-28.
