KINGSTON, R.I. - Rhode Island freshman Ari Castillo earned 2019 Atlantic 10 Second Team All-Conference honors and was named to the league's all-rookie team as well, the conference announced Tuesday afternoon. Castillo was joined on the all-rookie team by Sami Villarreal.
Castillo - who started all 46 games at shortstop for the Rams - had one of the best individual seasons in program history. Here are where some of her single-season totals rank in program history:
- .456 On-Base Percentage - second
- .392 Batting Average - third
- .657 Slugging Percentage - fourth
- 8 Home Runs - fourth
- 94 Total Bases - fifth
- 56 Hits - sixth
- 12 Doubles - 10th
- 89 Assists - 10th
Among Atlantic 10 players, Castillo was fifth in batting average and slugging percentage, sixth in home runs, eighth in doubles and eight in on-base percentage. She also was the league's Rookie of the Week twice.
Villarreal earned all-rookie honors as well despite missing 20 games due to a season-ending injury. In 26 games, she batted .385 with 24 hits, eight doubles and two home runs. Villarreal tied for sixth in the league with 23 walks and led the Rams with nine stolen bases. She scored 16 runs and had 10 RBI. Villarreal also earned Rookie of the Week honors once.
Saint Louis outfielder Gabbie Kowalik was the A-10 Rookie of the Year. She batted .331, slugged .530, had an on-base percentage of .393, had six home runs and eight doubles.
